Lost jobs? Solution - some low interest emergency government loans for a couple electric car plants, wind or wave generator factories. In ten years we have our money back, people have jobs and the US is a stronger, cleaner, more independant nation.
BP is the scapegoat. The real culprit is the people demanding the oil, you and I. We over consume and demand that oil companies provide for it. We can easily use less oil.
Drive less, drive more efficiently and buy local food and products ... for starters.
