Mass protests scour Middle Eastern countries. Democracy spreads. I see stories about what our new role in the region should be.
This is our big chance to get the hell out. And I offer a few incentives.
1) I have been surprised to learn, over the years, of all the anti-democracy dictators that we were directly responsible for putting into power. And which we had to later 'help' remove. So many times we should have just stayed out of it.
2) Democracy doesn't feel good if it's not earned. When someone hands you democracy, you won't cherish it. And, forcing Democracy on people is not very democratic. Also, all countries already have an element of democracy. When a suppressed people choose not to rise up and demand better they are electing for the status quo.
3) The US, arguably, justifies terrorism when it meddles. Just as you or I might commit violent acts against a foreign power invading our soil.
By stay out I mean bodily stay out. Limited financial and political support are important. And wielding the big stick is important. But it is more effective and respected if done from out in the street instead of in someone's livingroom.
And reasonable, clear lines must be drawn. Cross them and feel the full force of a strong country's diplomacy. No more ground invasions. Tactical surgical strikes on the responsible parties only. Save money, save time, less anti-US sentiment.
