Senator Boxer,
Thanks for all you do environmentally.
Transportaion solutions:
-Multiple car pool lanes on all freeways.
-More Metro rails and routes
-Giant and free and convenient Metro parking lots.
-Clean and safe Metro rail cars with free WiFi.
-Close off city and town centers to automobiles - no cars.
I've got more but this is a good start. Some details below. Contact me for the whole plan.
In professional sailing we picture our ideal outcome then work backwards in our minds to our current situation to create our plans for success. I propose we do this with transportation:
In our future perfect world there are no cars (with their pollution, death rate, infrastructure , maintenance and fueling and driving requirements). There are only quiet, overhead, traffic-free, automatic, electric, people/freight movers (I've designed an entire system). Streets become green belts for walking, cycling; you know, joyous living.
How do we get there from here? We need to change how people think by making "Automated Transit" something they can't live without. We've already started.
More car pool lanes:
Car pool lanes are the cool part of the freeway. You feel like an idiot watching people blow by you because you've chosen to hog an entire fossil fuel car to yourself. We should start with two car pool lanes on the more crowded stretches of freeway. Cars should have their MPG number on a sticker on the bumper. Cars with 40mpg or more can use the lanes. This number would increase as more efficient cars join the ranks and the CP lanes slow. (This could be done real time with electronic signs.)
Metro:
Everyone loves the Metro, or they would, if it went everywhere they wanted to go. We need to push for more Metro rails and routes. I know it is expensive but it is a permanent solution to so many problems.
We need giant and free and convenient Metro parking lots. It shouldn't be a hassle to use the Metro. The Metro cars should be clean and safe. They should have free WiFi. Let's attract the business people (the one's that get senators elected).
Car Free:
Close off city and town centers to automobiles. Start with one street here and there and slowly expand. As the zones expand add people movers (trollies, whatever). This will Create quieter, safer, happier areas to work and live in. People will thank you. Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach Pier etc. – it works, people love it.
This will put us on the path toward a fully autonomous, high speed (when necessary), all access, enviro-friendly, uncar system.
